The Tennessee baseball program continued reshaping its roster on July 6 with the commitment of shortstop Chris Ramirez, who announced his move from California Baptist to the Vols via social media.
Ramirez arrives after a breakout sophomore season that included being named the 2026 WAC Player of the Year and finishing as one of five finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award, presented annually to the nation's top shortstop. In his 2026 campaign, Ramirez hit .389 with a school-record 98 hits, along with 7 home runs, 22 doubles, 42 RBIs and 21 stolen bases. He also earned WAC Defensive Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season.
"See you at Rocky Top," Ramirez wrote in his announcement on X.
What Ramirez brings to Knoxville
With Tennessee’s 2025 starting shortstop Manny Marín now at Arkansas, Ramirez is positioned to step directly into a starting role. At 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, he combines contact hitting, gap power and speed on the bases with proven defensive credentials at shortstop — a profile Tennessee has sought to reinforce through the transfer portal.
- 2026 batting average: .389
- 2026 hits: 98 (school record)
- Extra-base hits: 7 HR, 22 doubles
- Stolen bases: 21
- Defensive honors: WAC Defensive Player of the Year (two straight seasons)
How this fits Tennessee’s portal strategy
Ramirez is the latest high-profile addition the Vols have secured from the transfer portal this cycle. Tennessee previously added several pitchers and position players ranked among Baseball America’s top portal prospects, including left-handers Brody Trosclair (No. 4) and Jake McCoy (No. 6), and Ricky Ojeda (No. 8).
The Vols’ incoming portal class also lists outfield and infield pieces such as Andrew Duncan (Wright State), Travis Sanders (Baylor) and Wyatt Hanoian (Air Force), as well as pitchers like Parker Detmers (Louisville). The team has also experienced turnover, with a number of players departing for other programs.
| Category | Notable names |
|---|---|
| Incoming transfers (selected) | Parker Detmers, Andrew Duncan, Wyatt Hanoian, Chris Ramirez |
| Departures (selected) | Manny Marín (Arkansas), Evan Hankins (Virginia Tech), Nate Eisfelder (Indiana) |
For Tennessee coach and staff, Ramirez offers immediate depth up the middle and a potential long-term answer at shortstop. His combination of offensive production and defensive recognition is rare for an underclassman — he was the only underclassman among the Brooks Wallace Award finalists — and helps explain why the Vols pursued him.
Vols fans should expect Ramirez to be a focal point of the infield in the coming season if he meets expectations and clears any remaining administrative or eligibility steps required for transfers. The addition also underscores Tennessee’s continued use of the transfer portal as a vehicle to assemble a roster capable of competing in the SEC and beyond.
